As part of a larger study about fish in Great Bear Lake, the Délı̨nę Renewable Resources Council sponsored a traditional knowledge project to understand changes in the fisheries over the last 30 years. Dr. M. Yamin Janjua worked with Michael Neyelle and a community trainee to facilitate this study. Louise Chavarie returned to Délı̨nę as well to talk about how this project relates to her trout traditional knowledge study. Yellowknife Dept of Fisheries and Oceans biologist Deanna Leonard also participated as an observer.
This study provided an opportunity to learn about community approaches to fisheries management. It supported one of the objectives in the “Waterheart” Great Bear Lake Management Plan to develop a picture of the ecology of the lake.
Dr. Yamin Janjua is a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has been studying the ecology of giant Canadian lakes. For more information about this study, contact DRRC at 589-8112.
