From the report, "In the fall of 2009 the Délı̨nę Remediation Program (DRP) and Délı̨nę Knowledge Project (DKP) initiated a traditional knowledge mapping project. The core of the project during 2009 was verifying placename spellings around Great Bear Lake. A traditional knowledge study of the Sawmill Bay area was completed. The DRP and DKP also began to develop a story-based approach to mapping that would be framed by family areas around the lake, so as to ensure that the appropriate people are involved in both sharing knowledge and learning about their heritage in their traditional areas.
During 2010-2011, the DRP and DKP undertook a more in-depth mapping project focused in the “remediation zone” where abandoned mines are located. We also undertook the collection, scoping and clean-up of documented placenames. The objectives of the project were expanded through a number of partnerships. The project included educational, skill-building and research elements, and gave rise to a comprehensive understanding of historical, ecological and cultural aspects of the Remediation Zone landscape."
